About the event

Sabine Baring-Gould – Remembered after 100 years with member Vanni Cook.

What couldn’t this “Squarson” (parson as well as squire) of Lewtrenchard do? This member of Tavistock Subscription Library was an Anglican priest, hagiographer, antiquarian, novelist, folk song collector and eclectic scholar. His bibliography consists of more than 1,240 publications, though this list continues to grow. He is remembered particularly as a writer of hymns, the best-known being Onward, Christian Soldiers. He also translated the carols The Angel Gabriel from heaven came and Sing Lullaby from Basque to English. His family home, the manor house at Lewtrenchard has been preserved as he had it rebuilt and is now a hotel. Sabine (Image – portrait after W. & D. Downey. Vanni has been researching his life and work for the Baring-Gould creative workshops that she has been running recently.
